On August 13th, MAR hosted an educational workshop intended to give community members the knowledge and tools necessary to landscape their yard in a Florida-Friendly way! The event took place at Golden Isles Brewing Co and featured a presentation on Florida-Friendly Landscaping by Doris Heitzman, some native plant themed giveaways from MAR, and a Rooted in Florida native plant guidebook raffle.
About the Speaker
Doris Heitzmann was our speaker for this event, and she is the Program Manager of the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program at Pinellas County UF/IFAS Extension. She focuses on educating community associations and their members on how to adopt water conservation techniques and reduce stormwater runoff, while creating and maintaining attractive and sustainable landscapes. Doris is a horticulturist, landscape designer, ISA Certified Arborist, and a Florida Master Gardener.
About the Presentation
Doris provided our audience with a very informative and entertaining presentation. She explained how to properly assess your planting site, choose the best plants for your site, and design your landscape to serve as habitat for native wildlife. She also provided participants with a list of resources to reference when planning their own gardens.
Native Plant Themed Giveaways
Throughout the event, MAR gave away seed packets with Florida native wildflower seeds, discount cards for Wildflower Ice Cream (a locally owned ice cream shop) and coloring books inspired by our Rooted in Florida plant guidebook. Everyone who attended was also entered into a raffle to win a copy of Rooted in Florida, and the winner was announced at the end of the presentation.
